JANUARY NEWSLETTER 2012

COMMANDANT’S MESSAGE
So we begin another year, get some new toys over the holidays? Anyone? I
know I did. Spent near Christmas time with Family (Carl and Tom) on a trip to
Lejuene, a very big learning experience for one like myself that is shy and
reserved. After the "BIG DAY", members of the Detachment put up the trusses on
the pavilion and are preparing for the metal. With about ten days off work and a
load of "Honey Do's' to contend with, there was still time to spend with the Staff
and finish off end of the year unit business. Our Quarterly reports are done and
turned in and Toys for Tots was once again a big success.
As the host Marine Corps Unit in Cherokee County for Toys for Tots, with a
member of our own family as the coordinator and so many others from 1011
doing their part as volunteers, there is always a great amount of joy that comes
with being the Commandant during the Holidays that just says Marine Corps.
Know matter the economic conditions/weather/time of day or nite, the members
always fulfill the mission.  John's success as coordinator is due in no small part
to his personal leadership, perseverance and self motivation towards his
volunteers which allows the Marine Corps League through the Toys for Tots
program to help so many children in our area.  You can hold your heads high as
the New Year begins but remember there's always 2012 to prepare for and the 7
P's will once again apply.
Our Awards Ceremony, Elections, Memorial Day and a host of other events
will dot our calender and the website along with some new members and a
readiness to deal with each situation as it rears it's head.  This year we will
dedicate in a formal ceremony one of our buildings to a member of our
detachment that will always be considered the "Founding Father" of the Marine
Corps League in Cherokee County.  I stand ready to deal with all challenges and
look forward to keeping the Marine Corps League Detachment 1011 the premier
military organization in Cherokee County.
Lastly I appeal to Members as I always do, to come out and share your
membership with us and spend time together as Marines. You are the League and
we need your ideas and support.

SR. VICE COMMANDANT'S MESSAGE

Well 2011 has passed on now and we are ready to attack 2012 with vigor.  I
hope everyone had a great holiday season.  I have to brag on my recent trip to
Camp Lejuene just prior to Christmas. My fellow travelers were Gunny "The
Voice" Van Buskirk and Tom "Boom Boom" Vitale. Do I need to say it was a
hoot? Vitale was very happy to see his old unit,"Eight Engineers." They wouldn't
let him have any C-4 however.
During the break between Christmas and New Year's Gunny,Tom, Johnny,
Randy and I put up the trusses on the pavilion. Let's make 2012 another banner
year for the detachment. Our next meeting is Thur. the 19th, see you there.

CHAPLAIN'S CORNER
Chaplain's Corner---Happy New Year to everyone; to all of our League members
and their families and friends! And may God bless us all!  We now face a new
year of challenges, and for Marines this means a new year of achievements!  We
can be very proud of our work in 2011, for the many things we did for our own
League members and also for the things we did for our Cherokee County
community.
I won't try to summarize all those things here---I'm sure our other officers
will do that. Instead, I will focus on asking that we all dedicate ourselves to
making 2012 an equally successful or even more successful year. My first
personal New Year's resolution is to be the best husband, father, and servant of
the Lord that I can be.  My second resolution is to give more time and energy to
the activities of the League.
I deeply believe that the most important way we serve the Lord is to serve
other people who need our help and assistance. Therefore, my respectful request
of each League member is that he or she make a resolution to be significantly
involved in at least one major 2012 League activity.
A great Jewish religious leader of twenty-five hundred years ago was once
asked, "What are the most important Commandments that God gives to us in the
Bible?" He replied, "There are only two Commandments in the Bible. Love the
Lord thy God with all thy heart, and LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AS THYSELF.
Everything else is just a commentary (SOPs!) on how to do these two things.
May we all take this to heart  AND PUT IT INTO ACTION THIS COMING YEAR!
